THE END OF A LEGEND

THE END OF A LEGEND

We haven't seen Goober for 2 or 3 days
Dad please find him no matter the cost
We hope he's not lost out on the byways
I told them Goober would never get lost
Because when God created him for you
Into him a "GPS" the Good Lord tossed
Well ok they said but what can we do
I don't work today,and  I'll find him too
I drove into town and looked all around
Did'nt see hide nor hair of the old boo
Then I thought better check in the pound
What I found there, Oh it made me so mad
Conditions weren't good no,not even fair
And in a cage lay Goober, forlorn and sad
On a cold concrete floor soggy and bare
Not even a pad for the dog to lay down
Goober grinned, but he couldn't get up
Skinny and weak lost weight all around
Pound manager said he just wouldnt eat
The food in the bowl he wouldn't touch
Dogcatcher knows him, thats real low down
He knows Goober eats fresh meat and such
And where Goober lives, just out of town
And we'd pay for it,Thank you very much
Goober never got over his stay in jail
We took care of him, love in each touch
Arthritis got him all over, head to tail
Goober no longer could go on his hunts
Or rounds at the neighbors for a treat
Lost his will to live made us wanna weep
Got up for work,a sad sight did I greet
On that morning, our sorrow was so deep
Goober,the Community Dog,of our street
Who we all loved, had died in his sleep
